Light in Midwinter Middlesbrough

I love Middlesbrough. Not only is it set in some of the most outstandingly beautiful landscapes in the UK, the town itself is a pleasure to visit. I look forward to the walk from the station with it's wonderful architectural surroundings, and one of my favourite routes is past the spacious town hall square on the way to Teesside University.

The above photo was taken a couple of weeks ago, very early one morning when the snows had just begun. It was my first view of this year's tree. As I passed, the sun suddenly came out from behind the looming snow-clouds, shining directly through the star that crowns the tree.

It was a moment of such beauty and hope. May this town and inhabitants, it's industry and excellent inspirational University prosper!

The tree yesterday, lit by the town lights and the waxing moon.

I had never expected a blog post to begin 'I love Middlesbrough'. It has been the surprise of the day. So happy you like the North East.

In case I don't have a chance to wish you a good Christmas closer to the 25th, may I do say now? I hope the year ahead will be happy and fulfilling - and thank you for liking my blogs!

Love your photos of Middlesborough. Has a beauty all of its own! I'm just back to Ireland from Crewe, my hometown; and industrial town, but like Middlesborough possesses a unique beauty of its own.
Thank you for sharing.

Thank you Maureen! Glad you like the photos and Middlesbrough's beauty. I have not yet visited Crewe. I often painted industrial scenes when an art student.

Beautiful scenes, Middlesbrough looks like a wonderful place to visit. I love the lighting in both images.

Thank you Diane. Middlesbrough is a great place to visit and is surrounded by wonderful countryside too. The light around Cleveland is unique.

Hi - what great timing for your first photo and the tree looks magnificent at night.

I wonder if we'll feel the same when we visit Darlington in the next few days (weather willing!)

THnaks for taking part in OOTS and showing us a new spot for this meme. No problem with the double link - I've got that sorted :)

Thank you VP! I was lucky with the timing and managed to get my camera out before the sun had gone again!

Hope you have a great trip to Darlington. It's very cold and icy on the pavements up here in the North East today, but there's a nice festive atmosphere. And most of the shops have sold out completely of wellies ...

Talk about walking past somewhere just at the right moment with your first photo :) Methinks that Midwinter Middlesborough has a certain attractive ring to it.

I was so glad I had my camera with me, Anna! Took several shots very quickly and camera got covered in snow.

Maybe I should do some More Midwinter Middlesbrough ...

Phoenix C. said...

I will certainly do so, Bim! Photos around Middlesbrough through the seasons maybe too, in 2011!

Yes, it is surely a joy to travel, to experience the world as would another ... And to have that trusty camera, what a propitious act!

Phoenix C. said...

It is indeed, Prospero, and my trusty camera is a true friend! (Wish the batteries wouldn't make it so heavy, though!)

I like your homage to Middlesborough. I used to visit regularly when a publishers' agent. Remember entering via the Transporter Bridge very clearly. Love the North-East in general. Was at Uni in Durham and loved the place to bits. Also Newcastle: one of the greatest - and friendliest - of English cities. That Northumbrian coast, the Tyne valley, Finchale Priory, Rothbury, Alnwick, Bamburgh Castle, Lindisfarne. Ah, happy days!

Thank you Solitary Walker. I love the Transporter Bridge, it is a unique landmark. I also love the first view of Roseberry Topping when approaching Middlesbrough - my heart always lifts!

And those other lovely North-East places you mention. There is so much beauty, variety and friendliness up here!
